How We Chose the Best BJJ Gis
Over the last few years, we have trained in, sweat in, and washed Gis from all of the top brands in the Jiu Jitsu world. We’ve also spoken with experienced Jiu Jitsu professors, athletes, and competitors to discover what matters most when selecting a Gi.
In general, the best BJJ Gi will have a combination of four traits: durability, a good fit, overall aesthetic, and a fair price point. You’ll notice that our list includes budget options starting at $85 and going all the way up to a made-in-USA Gi for $304. So you can spend whatever you want on a Gi; it just comes down to what matters to you and how you’re going to use it. Read the rest of this post to discover what we liked, and what we didn’t, about each Gi on our list.
Durability
In order to even be considered on our list, the Gi must hold up over time.
Fit
After durability, the fit is the most important aspect of your Gi.
Aesthetic
At JJW, we favor Gis with simple, clean designs for a sophisticated look.
Price Point
You can spend over $300 for a Gi if you want, but it’s certainly not necessary.
The Best BJJ Gi Overall: Shoyoroll Classic Brazil Kimono
Shoyoroll Classic Brazil Kimono
Competition Legal: Yes
Jacket: 410g Pearl Weave Cotton
Pants: 10oz Twill Cotton
This clean, aesthetic design is from one of the top Jiu Jitsu brands in the world. It is durable, looks great, and offers everything you need for training or competition.
After hundreds of grappling sessions and an equal number of wash cycles, the Classic Brazil Kimono from the iconic Shoyoroll brand is our #1 pick for Best Overall BJJ Gi of 2024, displaying dominance across our four levels of criteria: Durability, Fit, Aesthetic, and Price Point.
Constructed from 410g Pearl Weave Cotton, the Classic Brazil Kimono distinguishes itself through longevity. Noteworthy is the origin – produced in Brazil by Shoyoroll, in contrast to the brand’s usual manufacturing base in Pakistan. The fit of the gi is exceptional, striking the perfect balance between mobility and snugness. It adheres closely to the body, facilitating unrestricted movement on the mats, and its tailored cut adds a tapered aesthetic.
Design-wise, the gi stands out on Shoyoroll’s site for its simplicity – and that’s part of why we love it. There is a time and place for patches on your Gi, like if you are representing your team, but as a starting point, we prefer the clean look of this Gi. And last but not least comes the price point. While a majority of Shoyoroll’s kimonos come in around $250, the Classic Brazil is one of their more affordable options. And, price point aside, we think this is their best-looking Gi.
The Best BJJ Gi for Beginners: Kingz The One Gi (Free White Belt)
Kingz The One Gi
Competition Legal: Yes
Jacket: 400g Pearl Weave Cotton
Pants: 10oz Cotton
This is a high-quality, durable Gi from a well-known brand in BJJ. It comes with a free white belt, making it the perfect first Gi for beginners.
Voted our best BJJ Gi for beginners, The One Gi‘s jacket comes in a 400 GSM High-Tech Pearl Weave that’s been engineered from a single piece of fabric. This innovative design, coupled with ample reinforcements in all major stress points, ensures durability without compromising on flexibility.
One of the standout features of The One Gi is its lapel, constructed from a single piece of synthetic heat-resistant vulcanized rubber. This unique material not only keeps the Gi lightweight but also facilitates faster drying while maintaining a hygienic environment by preventing the growth of odor-causing bacteria.
The pants, constructed from 100% 10 oz cotton, strike the perfect balance between durability and comfort. The interior seams, often prone to fraying, are reinforced with soft cotton taping, ensuring longevity even during the most rigorous training sessions.
The Best BJJ Gi for Competition: Aesthetic Alpha Gi
Aesthetic Alpha Gi
Competition Legal: Yes
Jacket: 390g Pearl Weave Cotton
Pants: 8oz Ripstop
Worn by some of the top BJJ competitors in the world, the Aesthetic Alpha Gi is built for high-level competition.
The Aesthetic Alpha Gi comes in as our winner for Best BJJ Gi for Competition. Engineered to meet the demands of competitive grappling, this kimono stands out with its ideal blend of durability and performance. The jacket is made from a sturdy 390 GSM Pearl Weave Cotton, offering a lighter weight option than others on this list.
Complementing the kimono, the pants feature a lightweight yet durable 8oz Ripstop fabric construction. This choice of materials in both the kimono and pants not only enhances mobility and agility but also ensures longevity, making the Alpha Gi a solid choice for practitioners of all levels.
The Best Minimalist BJJ Gi: Jiujiteiro Core Gi
Jiujiteiro Core Gi in Black
Competition Legal: Yes
Jacket: 400g Pearl Weave Cotton
Pants: 10oz Ripstop
Jiujiteiro is a newer brand in the BJJ world, but their Core Gi is the epitome of their signature look. Simple, yet sophisticated, with great attention to detail.
Our favorite minimalist Gi is the Core Gi from Jiujiteiro. This Gi really has everything you need and comes with a super reasonable price tag at only $119. If you are like us and prefer an understated design without loud branding, Jiujiteiro might be your new favorite brand; everything they make is intentionally minimalist. The jacket is comfortable and fits well, and the pants are extra durable with the ripstop pattern.
The attention to detail from Jiujiteiro is also worth pointing out. It’s the subtle features that really draw us to this gi, from the unique pattern on the white/black drawcord to the overlay panels on the knees that add durability in a high-friction area. The only potential drawback with this Gi is the ripstop pants can be a little stiffer than cotton twill options in a similar weight, and they’re not quite as breathable, meaning they can be a little sweatier. However, the pants are pretty lightweight, so you won’t have to worry about that unless you train in an exceptionally hot climate.
The Best Anti-Stink BJJ Gi: Datsusara Combat Gi
Datsusara Combat Gi
Competition Legal: Yes
Jacket: 580g Long Fiber Weave Hemp
Pants: 11oz Long Fiber Hemp Twill
Endorsed by Joe Rogan himself, the Datsusara Combat Gi is made from 100% hemp so it’s soft, durable, and naturally antimicrobial.
We always love brands that try to innovate, and in the last few years, there have been several brands attempting to make Gis out of hemp for a sustainable fabric choice that comes with other performance benefits. Of these brands, Datsusara seems to have emerged as the frontrunner for the time being, earning endorsements from the likes of Joe Rogan.
The Datsusara Combat Gi is made from 100% hemp, offering an alternative to the classic cotton Gis that most people are familiar with. Hemp is an interesting alternative for several reasons. Most notably, hemp is naturally antimicrobial, meaning it fights off microbes that cause bad odors as well as infections like staph. Hemp is also stronger than cotton on a fiber level while still being very breathable.
The one potential drawback to the 100% hemp Gi is the price tag. Coming in at just under $200 USD, this is one of the more expensive options on our list. However, due to the natural qualities of hemp, this Gi is likely going to last you much longer than a cotton Gi, so you can treat it like an investment.
The Best Lightweight BJJ Gi: Hyperfly Hyperlyte 3.5
Hyperfly Hyperlyte 3.5
Competition Legal: Yes
Jacket: 380g Superfine Woven Cotton
Pants: 8oz Cotton Twill
One of the lightest weight Gis on our list, this Gi offers ultimate breathability for those who are prone to sweat or train in hot climates.
Voted Best Lightweight Gi, the Hyperlyte 3.5 is ideal for anyone who runs hot and is prone to a lot of sweat or for those who train in hot climates. It is the second lightest weight Gi on our list, and it offers maximal breathability. The 380g superfine cotton kimono is very soft and naturally breathable. And in order to comply with recent changes to IBJJF competition rules, the design has been recently updated to maintain 100% compliance.
The Best Budget BJJ Gi: Tatami Elements Superlite Gi
Tatami Elements Superlite Gi
Competition Legal: Yes
Jacket: 300g Pearl Weave Cotton
Pants: 8oz Ripstop
At an incredibly affordable price from a popular BJJ brand, this Gi will do everything you need it to if you are new to Jiu Jitsu or looking for a more affordable option.
The budget-friendly Gi, priced at only $85, has been recognized as the best choice in its category. Featuring a lightweight design, it includes a 300GSM pearl weave jacket and 8oz ripstop pants. The Gi is adorned with high-quality embroidery showcasing Tatami and Jiu Jitsu logos on both the jacket and pants. A Tatami branded label is stitched to the front collar and the back of the jacket hem. The jacket includes side vents for added breathability, while the pants feature a Tatami branded drawcord. Additionally, the Gi comes with a complimentary white belt, making it an excellent choice if you are just getting started.
The Best Made-in-USA Gi: Origin Nano Pearl™ Comp Gi
Origin Nano Pearl™ Comp Gi

Jacket: 9.6 oz Polysynth™
Pants: Atomic Twill Gen 2
Comfortable, durable, and quick-drying, this Gi is built to last for years. The quality is exceptional, and it’s 100% made in the USA.

The Comp Gi comes with a Nano Pearl™ Jacket made from 100% Polysynth™ fabric, which offers enhanced moisture-wicking properties compared to traditional cotton jackets. The weave of the jacket is designed to promote shape retention and an abrasive texture to fight against opponents’ grips.
